Tjuatoten

Tjuatoten is a mountain ridge which rises majestically to a height of 1,098 meters above the fjord, with spectacular views over the Sognefjord and the nearby fjord arms Esefjord, Vetlefjord and Fjærlandsfjord. The trail is well-marked and maintained.

The first part of the trail, up to Mastene (400 m., also called Orraleiken) goes along a forest track and then on a path up through the forest. Alternatively you can drive to Mastene on the forest track by paying a toll. At the pylons you get very fine views towards Balestrand and the Esefjord. Perched on a cliff under Mastene you’ll find the hut Kløyvd, where you can enjoy the view or find shelter. The hut was built in 2020 by students from the Bergen School of Architecture, in cooperation with Sogndal municipality.

From Orraleiken the trail is less steep as it goes up through the birchwoods to Storesteinane (500 m). From here it becomes steadily steeper towards the top, where you get fantastic views. For another spectacular view take a short walk on the marked path from the cairn on the summit and you can look down the ravine Båtskregjelet, which goes one thousand meters straight down to Esebotn. Along the path you can also see the contours of an old stone sun cross on the ground. Take plenty to drink, as there is no drinking water on route.
